The tidewater area of Virginia is bordered by the Potomac River on the north and the North Carolina state border on the south. Rivers intertwined with early American history run through that region, the James, York and Rappahannock Rivers are the major ones and they all terminate into the Chesapeake Bay, close to Hampton and Norfolk. These rivers were the highways of commerce to the early English settler of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries and provided access to the European markets for the cotton and tobacco crops grown on the plantations. Our Tidewater candlesticks could be found in the plantation homes of the well to do land owners of the region. Their classic design added a touch of elegance and the practicality of illumination.
