The Bourne Historical Society has in its collection one of the earliest candlesticks used in America. The Bourne trading post was founded in 1626 by the Pilgrims and abandoned in about 1660. The excavated candlestick is shaped like a saucer with a socket in it and has a long handle with a hole for hanging. It does indeed look like a small frying pan, it is speculated that it is an improvement on an improvised candle holder. This kind of candlestick was made in Holland and England and it is not known which was the origin of the candlestick found in Bourne. The original certainly is of pre 1660 manufacture.
This design is our version of this important early candlestick.
