Fellow Son of Liberty Paul Revere was commissioned to fashion a silver punch bowl, the “LIBERTY BOWL” engraved with words and images in honor of "the glorious NINETY-TWO . . . who, undaunted by the insolent Menaces of Villains in Power, from a strict Regard to Conscience, and the LIBERTIES of their Constituents . . . Voted NOT TO RESCIND."
Revere engraved the Liberty Bowl with a number of Whig images and slogans--the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, liberty caps, "Wilkes and Liberty," and "No. 45." Massachusetts patriots were now linked with John Wilkes, the British opposition leader whose defense of liberty and the constitution against the encroachments of a corrupt government led to his arrest for libel and the loss of his seat in Parliament.
Revere's Liberty Bowl, placed on display at Nathaniel Barber's insurance office, served as a reminder, as William Palfrey later wrote, that "the fate of Wilkes and America must stand or fall together."
Paul Revere's Ride"Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere,
On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five;
Hardly a man is now alive
Who remembers that famous day and year.
He said to his friend, "If the British march
By land or sea from the town to-night,
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light,--
One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country folk to be up and to arm....."By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Paul Revere is most remembered today for his involvement in a series of small uprisings known as the "Powder Alarms." His famous "Midnight Ride" occurred on the night of April 18-19 1775, when he and William Dawes were chosen by Dr. Joseph Warren to ride inland from Charlestown to warn the militias at Lexington and Concord of the approach of British army troops from Boston. Later, they were joined by Samuel Prescott, a doctor who was just returning from a visit to Lexington. Instructed to make as little noise as possible on the route, Revere chose instead to alarm the houses along the route by shouting out a warning of the approaching troops.
After the war Paul Revere continued the manufacture of gold and silver ware. He was early to recognize the appeal of fine metal goods beyond the upper class to the growing middle class.
