Product Details

This adaptation of a lovely Baroque Period Candlestick (1650 - 1715) measures 6" high X 4-1/2" base. The brass is lacquered to keep it shining, the base is felted to protect fine finishes. The solid brass candle stick weighs 1 pound 3 ounces. This adaptation was inspired by a candlestick found in New Paltz, New York and was known to be owned by a Huguenot family there.

The Baroque style of candlestick is the first that can be associated with America. The style is characterized by heavy designs with turnings or a spiral twist. The turnings are intended to contrast light and dark, a technique known as "chiaroscuro." Chiaroscuro is most often found in Baroque art. It was Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573-1610) who developed the technique of chiaroscuro.
